Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
