The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
