This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
