Scream Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
