Broad revealed that he remains uncertain about a reliable method to remove Steve Smith and warns that the Ashes could become a drawn-out contest if England fails to remove Smith during the initial stages.

The bowler explained: "Obviously his technique has evolved over time, but I still cannot confidently state here's the method to dismiss him."

"It comes to mind when the English fielder was positioned at that close leg-side position, and he kept diving left and right for the first 30 deliveries, barely failing to catch repeatedly," Broad described.

"The batsman survived, scored two centuries in that contest, remarkable performances."

Broad added: "I recall sitting in a strategy session about the Australian batsman in 2017-18 and the coaches proposed 'oh, you could try targeting his wickets early'}."

"Interesting suggestion, could we examine the number of occasions he's lost his wickets in home matches during the previous five seasons?' A single instance."

Fast Bowling Option

The forthcoming contest, beginning in Perth on Friday (early morning GMT), seems set to include Smith facing the English fast bowler for their initial test meeting since that year, when he was famously troubled and hit by a short ball during the fast bowler's intense over at Lord's.
