Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Exits After Move Into Chicken.

A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the UK might have reached peak pizza while expanding the company into chicken products has been ousted after conflicts with its directors.

Leadership Change

Andrew Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for over 20 years, had sought to redirect Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards fried chicken, stating in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the quickest rising food category in the globe.

Board Friction

Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his focus and management style, although the company's release said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.

Recent Product Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the business is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.

Board Comment

Bull, the Domino's chair, said: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to enhance value and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing finding the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said sales fell by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it warned that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in half-year profits.

Other pizza operators are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the closing of 68 restaurants a month ago, after the business behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Wellness Initiatives

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards better nutrition, Domino's has rolled out lower-calorie items, such as its thin-crust range of bakes below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has 909 calories.

Acting Leadership

Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and was formerly with the gaming group a well-known operator. It is believed that she is not seeking to occupy the top job permanently.

She said: “We have a number of current expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at speed.”

She said these included ongoing development on the organization's procurement system and product development, and its customer retention initiative.

The pizza chain is also without a permanent chief financial officer until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. For now, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
