Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
