The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
