Elite Athletes Call on Iran to Stop Death Sentence of Boxing Champion
More than 20 Olympic medal winners, coaches and other world-class competitors have endorsed a statement urging a end to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and instructor, who is on death row in the nation.

Amidst rising global condemnation over Iran’s escalating use of executions as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed appeal censures the government's verdict to confirm the death sentence of the athlete.
Vafaei Sani, thirty, from the city in the northeastern region, was detained for participating in nationwide protests in 2019 and accused of supporting an dissident organization. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and kept in seclusion.
“Competition is designed to promote hope, unity, and courage,” the signatories stated. “The capital punishment of a champion for his opinions is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to every athlete who attempts to speak out.
Pattern of Putting to Death Competitors
The letter pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was not unique and highlighted the country's past of sentencing to death athletes for their views, including Habib Khabiri, skipper of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old national sports titleholder, faced the death penalty.
Further signatories to the statement include a sailing champion, who led the first all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the initial female to earn a renowned nautical honor; the former skipper of the Australian football team an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.
Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings
Vafaei Sani was arrested in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and destruction of public property”. His ruling has been overturned twice but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the latest review. His court case was condemned as “deeply biased” by advocates and groups.
Appeal to International Body
The call to stop the boxer's capital punishment is subsequent to a previous appeal to the United Nations official for rights, backed by over a hundred advocates and entities, urging action to avert the sports figure's death.
Execution Crisis
Based on data, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has reached alarming dimensions”. In the year 2023, officials sentenced at least 853 people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. In the prior period, data showed nine hundred seventy-two capital punishments, representing the maximum count since two thousand fifteen. More than hundreds of people have been put to death so far in 2025.
Dissidents and opponents are focus, especially in the aftermath of the 2022 uprising. Experts say the Iranian authorities have used the death penalty to suppress protest, create apprehension among the population and reinforce their grip on authority.
