Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who escaped following the incident was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene revealed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
