Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unneeded offerings can be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders on official trips. This unusual assortment reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. A date is yet to be set, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The presents reportedly kept in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
A complete inventory remains made public, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion centered on if a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
An International Array of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a unconventional way to manage the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
